Technical Regulation for Leather Products
Exporters of leather goods must comply with the Technical Regulation for Leather Products, officially issued by the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) on 28 January 2021, under the reference 03-09-21-179. This regulation was introduced to ensure that leather products entering the Saudi market meet stringent safety, quality, and environmental standards in line with national and international best practices.
The regulation applies to all leather products, regardless of their composition—natural leather, synthetic leather, or a blend of both. It encompasses a broad range of consumer goods including but not limited to:
- Footwear and accessories
- Handbags, wallets, and belts
- Leather garments and outerwear
- Leather coverings, furnishings, and upholstery items
- Industrial and commercial leather-based articles
These items must meet specific technical specifications regarding material quality, chemical composition, labeling requirements, and product durability, among others. By complying with this regulation, exporters not only ensure smoother customs clearance but also demonstrate commitment to product safety, environmental stewardship, and consumer protection in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
